Squash Tips

Helpful squash tips from DSC professional Charlie Johnson

Ice Your Injury
Whether it's a nagging ache after you play or a sudden, acute pain, I've found that icing is one of the best therapies (along with 3 Advil if you're system will handle it!). After knee surgery in both knees, I know what I'm talking about! See the linked article for some suggested techniques for icing specific injuries or problems.

Sobhy Soars To World Title Success

Amanda Sobhy celebrated the perfect 17th birthday by beating Egyptian rival Nour El Tayeb in the final of the Women's World Junior Squash Championship to become the first US winner of the prestigious World Squash Federation event in its 16th year at the ACR Sportcenter in Cologne, Germany.

"It's the best birthday present anyone could ever ask for," said the New York teenager after recovering from a game down to defeat fellow 17-year-old El Tayeb 3-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-7 in 37 minutes.  It was Sobhy's first victory over the Egyptian in four meetings on the junior international circuit since January 2008.

The victory not only ends Egypt's seven-year stranglehold on the title since 2003, but also consigned Cairo-based El Tayeb to a runner-up finish for the second year in a row.

Third seed Sobhy made her breakthrough in the semi-finals when she beat reigning champion Nour El Sherbini, the 14-year-old favourite who won the title last year to become the sport's youngest ever world champion.

Sobhy, whose success makes her the first US player to win a world singles title, is no stranger to historic achievements in the sport:  In May, the left-hander became the first 16-year-old to win four WISPA World Tour titles – an achievement which has taken her to a career-high 36 world ranking.

In the bronze medal play-off match, India's No2 seed Dipika Pallikal made up for the disappointment of failing to make the final for the second successive year by battling to a 4-11, 11-4, 11-8, 8-11, 11-8 over favourite Nour El Sherbini in 52 minutes.

Phil SkardonIN MEMORIUM

Charles Philip Skardon

August 11, 1926 - May 18, 2010

Philip was born in Cleveland and after graduating from Springfield High School, he entered Yale University in July 1944 before being drafted into the United States Army after his freshman year. He served in the 24th Infantry Division from March 1945 through December 1946. He returned to Yale after World War II and graduated with honors in 1949. After graduation, Philip worked in New York City for the National Committee for a Free Europe, the parent organization for Radio Free Europe. He subsequently moved to Washington, D. C. in 1953 where he worked for the Central Intelligence Agency as a political analyst concentrating on Central and European affairs.

Philip left the CIA in 1957, returning to Ohio to work as a reporter at the Dayton Daily News, where he remained until leaving to become a management consultant specializing in labor affairs. Philip was the former chairman of the Festival USA Committee of the Dayton-Montgomery County Bicentennial Commission of 1976 and was active for a number of years in the Dayton Council of World Affairs, the Criterion club and Christ Episcopal Church.

Philip was an avid squash player who continued to play regularly until after his 81st birthday. He became the "patriarch" of the Dayton Squash Center and was a great ambassador for the game. He was always willing to get on court with players of any ability and "have a hit."  Many new players to the game enjoyed his gentle instruction and encouragement. Philip helped revive the Collopy Cup, annual squash team matches between Dayton & Cincinnati and served as captain of the Dayton team.

Philip is survived by his wife of 44 years, Catherine; his four sons Johnathan (Amy) of Dayton, Oh.; Christopher (Lydia) of Charlotte, N.C.; Stephen (Ann) of Chicago, Il.; Graham of Atlanta, Ga. and six grandchildren: Katherine, Emily, Peter, James, Lindsey, and Sanderson.

A Memorial Service was held Saturday, May 22nd at Christ Episcopal Church, 20 West First Street, Dayton , Ohio 45402. Contributions can be made in Philip's memory to Christ Episcopal Church or to the Miami Valley Squash foundation, care of the Dayton Squash Center, 3200 West Tech Rd. Miamisburg, Ohio 45342.

"Sir Phil" as we lovingly called him will be deeply missed.

HIGH SCHOOL SQUASH COMES TO SPRINGBORO!

May, 2010

Springboro Principal Dr. Ronald L. Malone announced that next year, for the 2010-2011 school year, Squash will be added at the high school as a club sport.

Nine incoming freshman students will be graduates of the Dayton Challenge Middle School Squash program and will form the nucleus of the team. Many upper-classman students were exposed to squash because of the Dayton Challenge program and the hope is that some of them will return to the sport.

The Springboro Panther team will be the FIRST High School team at a PUBLIC SCHOOL in OHIO and will join Dayton's Miami Valley School high school team playing in the Great Lakes Squash League. This league features teams from Cleveland, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Mercersburg, and hopefully a Cincinnati team for this coming season.

More information about Springboro High School Squash will be emailed out to students in the September 2010 and look for schedules and information in the "High School Squash" section of our web site.
